২৩ মে ভোর বেলা, ভাটিয়াপাড়া থেকে ২টি গান বোট ইতনার দিকে আসে। গানবোট নদীর পাড়ে ভিড়লে গ্রামের প্রতিরক্ষা দলের সদস্যরা দেখতে পায়। তারপর চিৎকার করে গ্রামবাসীদের সতর্ক করে। এ সময় ইতনা গ্রামে একজন পাগল ছিল। সে গ্রামবাসীদের চিৎকার করে সাবধান করছিল। মুহূর্তে খান সেনাদের গুলিতে ঝাঁজরা হয়ে গেল তার বুক । এর পর পাকিস্তানি হায়নার দল ইতনার প্রতিটি পাড়ায় ও বাড়িতে গিয়ে নির্বিচারে গুলি চালায় এবং বাড়ি ঘরে আগুন জ্বালিয়ে দেয়।  হিরু মাস্টার, সফিউদ্দিন মোল্যা, হাদি শিকদার, নালু খাঁ, আব্দুল রাজ্জাক মোল্যা সহ ৩৯ জন মুক্তিকামী মানুষকে হত্যা করে। গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে জীবন নিয়ে বেঁচে গিয়েছিলেন ৯ জন। তাদের মধ্যে চিকিৎসার অভাবে কিছু দিন পর ৩ জন মারা যায়।

In the early morning of 23th May, 2 gunboats from Bhatiapara came towards Itna. Members of the village's defense team had seen the Gunboats and warned the villagers. There was a maniac in the village who was screaming and warning the villagers. At the very moment, the Pakistani Army fired upon his chest.  Then, they fired on the villagers indiscriminately and burnt down the houses. They had killed 39 people where 9 people survived but some of them died after 3 days because of lack of treatment.
